Influence of Flow Field Design on Zinc Deposition and Performance in a Zinc-Iodide Flow Battery

Among the aqueous redox flow battery systems, chemistries using a zinc negative electrode have relatively high energy density, but potential of achieving power density and long cycle life is hindered by dendrite growth at anode. In this study, new cell design with narrow gap between membrane was applied in zinc-iodide battery. design, some electrolyte flows over surface fraction passes through porous felt direction current flow. The tested under constant 40 cycles, efficiency, discharge were significantly improved compared to conventional field designs. obtained study one highest densities reported for morphology deposition studied scanning electron microscopy optical profilometry. It found that led thinner deposit lower roughness on electrode, comparison case where there no electrode. addition, inhibition formation enabled operation higher range density. Ex situ tomographic measurements used image deposited inside felt. Volume rendering graphite from X-ray computed tomography images showed presence more occurred felt, resulting compact deposit, which may enable capacity performance.
